After a meal of soup and biscuits, Peter and Jade had claimed rocks overlooking the river, a lantern between them. Samuel leaned against a wide tree trunk beside them, reading with a flashlight.
Nine miles today, Peter said. He'd kept track of them and felt a physical relief around noon when he figured they'd gone far enough that he wouldn't risk running into Pax anymore.
Beside him, Jade groaned. Only nine miles. I always wish it were more. There's so much to do. Although it's not as if we can hurry it along.
"The water samples we took today and yesterday," Peter said. "Could you tell anything from them yet?"
"Some. We'll have to wait for the lab reports to know for sure, but I can already see a difference.
A difference?
Samuel and I tested this same stretch before we set up at the reservoir. Now that the water's pure there, yes, this part of the river is noticeably cleaner. It will get worse as we go downstream, as it picks up water from contaminated feeder streams. And then once we're at the next cleanup site, it will be really bad again. It was a military camp at an old mill. A ton of bad stuff was used there. It's leaking out.
Peter turned back to the river. He and his father had talked about a lot of things the last day at the mill site, but Peter hadn't asked him what exactly his job was in the mili-tary. He hadn't wanted to know. Now, he couldn't help wondering if he'd had a part in contaminating that water. Is that place the worst around here?
